COMING UP SUNDAY-JULY 15

This is the seventh Sunday after Pentecost. After church this week we will have a special international coffee hour with treats from France, Germany and Switzerland.
We continue to sell things items from Haiti every Friday at the Farmer's Market in Charlestown. See the column to the left for more information.
The General Convention of the Episcopal Church met in Indianapolis from July 5-12. They convene every 3 years in different cities across the US. This is the legislative body of our church. Bishop Wolf, Bishop Joslin and 8 delegates from Rhode Island were in attendance along with an assortment of other visitors and volunteers from our Diocese. The two most noteworthy pieces of news from The Convention are that the convention approved the election of our Bishop-elect, Nick Knisely. This step is required for all bishops-elect before they can be ordained. The other news item that has been in the public media has to do with the approval of a blessing for same-gender unions. This means that priests can conduct services blessing the union of homosexual couples- as long as the diocesan bishop consents. This service is not considered a marriage. According to a national Church spokesperson, this blessing is a "theological response to a monogamous, committed relationship."
